With a tubal ligation surgical risks include infection, bladder injury, inflammation of the bowel, hemorrhaging of major blood vessels and complications with anesthesia. All of which may be decreased by having a good physician. Long term health problems associated with it are bleeding from the uterus, painful intercourse, and pain and pressure in the pelvis. The occurrences of these health problems are rare. When comparing tubal ligation to other forms of birth control you should be aware that all unnatural forms of birth control have risks.

The IUD can cause irregular menstrual periods, spotting, and heavier menstrual flow. Complications from an IUD include uterine puncture, infection of the fallopian tubes, and expulsion of the IUD by the body which if unnoticed can lead to pregnancy.

Birth control pills can cause spotting, an increase in headaches, mood swings, tender breasts, blood clots in the brain, heart, lungs or legs, high blood pressure, gallstones, jaundice, insulin resistance, and tumors in the liver. These risks are increased for women who smoke and use the combination pill.

The birth control patch comes with a warning on the box cautioning users about the high possibility of getting a blood clot. Blood clots can lead to severe tissue damage, heart attack, and stroke. The risks of blood clots are increased for smokers and women 35 and older.

So in conclusion although tubal ligation is in no way without risks, it is definitely an effective form of birth control. It should be considered a permanent form of birth control which no effect on your menstrual cycle. Menopause will also proceed regularly.
