Not all women who had Tubal Ligation procedure have the same chance. There are several factors that determined the success of the Tubal Ligation Reversal procedure.

<!--break-->

Fallopian Tubes

The doctor who specializes in Tubal Ligation Reversal usually performs laparoscopy surgery to see if a woman would make a good candidate. If her fallopian tubes were clips or tied with rings around the tubes, then she has a good chance to become pregnant again by performing the reversal procedure. If her tubes were burn or had a large section of the tube removed, then it would make her to be less than ideal candidate for the Tubal Ligation Reversal procedure.

Age

Age plays a vital role to determine the success rate of the Tubal Ligation Reversal procedure. Women who are younger than 40 years have much better chances for successful reversal procedure. This has much to do with the fertility cycle of a female body. Naturally women who are 40 years in age or older are less likely to get pregnant. This is due to the decreasing ovarian reserve and abnormal number of chromosomes in the egg or the embryo.

General Health

The overall health condition of the candidate has a significant influence to the successful operation. Obese women are less likely to be successful when undergoing the Tubal Ligation Reversal. A woman who has done Tubal Ligation procedure over 10 years ago would not make a good candidate.

The Physician

The experience and knowledge of the physician who performs the Tubal Ligation reversal procedure makes a lot of different. Patients should ask their surgeon about pregnancy and complication rates in patients treated in the past.

Many young women tend to regret having Tubal Ligation procedure within 5 years after the surgery. The common reasons include getting into a new relationship and the loss of a child.

There is times when Tubal Ligation Reversal is not regretted because of the need to have another child, but rather because of the Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. It is common side effect after undergoing the Tubal Ligation procedure. The complications include irregular menstrual cycles, Tubal Pregnancy and pelvic pain.

What is the procedure like?
The procedure involves a microsurgery to reattach the two sections of the fallopian tubes together. Patients are normally put under general anesthesia. The success rate of the reversal procedure depends on how the Tubal Ligation was done. The best case of success is when those two parts of the fallopian tubes have identical diameter.

How long does it normally take?
On most cases, the Tubal Ligation Reversal procedure takes about one to three hours depending on the patient condition and the surgeons’ experience. For some cases, a hospital overnight stay maybe required. The less time it takes for the operation means the faster recovery time for the patient. Generally the recovery time takes anytime from three to six weeks.

Tubal Ligation is a female sterilization surgical procedure, in which the woman's tubes are cut off, blocked or tied in order to stop the eggs in the ovary to travel to the uterus. In layman term, it means "getting your fallopian tubes tied". Thus it will prevent the male sperm to fertilize the eggs. Although Tubal Ligation is considered as a permanent type of sterilization, it is possible to reverse the procedure using Tubal Ligation Reversal surgery.

How is Tubal Ligation Procedure performed?

There are quite a few procedures to get a Tubal Ligation, but the two most popular procedures are Laparoscopy and Minilaparotomy. Both of these procedures are minimally-invasive procedures with higher success rate. Others like Culpotomy and Culdoscopy are generally performed due to certain medical condition like obesity. All of these procedures can be performed under either general or local anesthesia. Each procedure carries different risks and benefits.

Laparoscopy

Using this procedure, a patient’s abdomen will be filled with carbon dioxide gas to distant the abdominal wall from the fallopian tubes and uterus. There are two incisions made to the body. First, a small abdominal incision is made to insert a laparoscope (looks like mini telescope). Then the second incision is on the upper part of the pubic hairline. The second incision is meant as an entrance of the instrument that will be used to clip or burn the fallopian tubes. The whole procedure takes about thirty minutes.

Minilaparotomy

It is performed by making a small abdominal incision above the pubic bone. This procedure is used to minimize the visibility of the scar after the surgery. Instead of utilizing the surgical retractors and packs, this procedure uses microsurgical instruments.

Culdoscopy

This procedure involves making a small incision in the vaginal wall. The patient must be in a knee-to-chest position during anesthesia. A culdoscope (viewing tube) is inserted into the incision to find the fallopian tubes and then seal them.

Culpotomy

Similar to Culdoscopy, it is performed by making a small incision in vaginal wall. The patients would also need to be in a knee-chest position under anesthesia. Using this procedure, the fallopian tubes are bought out using a medical instrument in order to be sealed. Once done, they are put back and stitched the incision.

Can You Get Pregnant with Tubal Ligation?

Tubal Ligation is a very effective method for birth control. It has a success rate of 95% to prevent pregnancy.
